Prison Island Tour on Zanzibar
Prison island (Changuu Island) is one of popular Zanzibar tours available from Stone Town known for giant tortoises. Easily accessible and interesting enough Prison Island tour is worth spending the money but don’t have high expectations as besides seeing tortoises there isn’t much to do there.
Prison island (Changuu Island) has dark history . Once the island was used by Arab slave traders to detain slaves prior sending them to new owners in Middle East and Europe.
Today Prison Island is a nature reserve and home to Giant tortoises that are to be found nowhere else in East Africa. A half day trip to Prison Island starts from Stone Town and the ride lasts about thirty minutes by boat.
The oldest turtle on the Prison island is 150 years old. You may feed and touch the giant tortoises however riding them or sitting on them is not allowed. The second part of the island is prison, nothing special , old building with not much to see.

Usually after Seeing tortoises and prison people spend some time on the beach and sunbath so bring swimming suit with you. In addition there is no available bar or place to purchase beverage. As the days on Zanzibar are hot bring your own water with you to Prison Island.
Prices vary, depending on the number of people on the boat that take Prison island Tour. You don’t have to book this tour from home or far in advance. Just ask in the hotel . The more people lesser the price. Our tour costed 20 Usd per person ( group of 5 people). Don’t buy guided tours – just the cost of transport, because for seeing turtles you really don’t need guidance.
